When I read Oprah Bradford’s sophomore novel Not Your Average Joe, I saw a passionate novelist. I never considered her a poet until I read Nostalgic Ink and I appreciate her broad and talented demeanor. In her Nostalgia’s Section, she goes back to past turmoil and how she came out clean. Her words truly speak to you. My favorites by her in this collection happen to be Sinnerboy, Hooker Red, Jar of Hearts, White Lily, (a poem she dedicated to a dear friend who is struggling with an alcohol addiction) and Dead Poets Society where she paid homage to Shakespeare and Tupac.

She quotes:“As I blow on dandelions, I hope Tupac is smiling on why Im not called a bitchOr how his rose from concrete is a stitch holding my ink-bleeding heart togetherForgive me ShakespeareI didnt get you in high schoolBut I get you now”Her section was a beautiful disaster and you can relate to when she goes back to nostalgia.I can tell Chelsey Magee is a hopeless romantic and has learned a lot about love in her short days of living. She shows a private side of when she speaks about her father whom she never got to meet. She quotes in the heartbreaking poem, To the Father I Never Met:“You somehow help me through every trial and tribulationPraying that I fit your standardsHoping that you’re proud and you feel the love that we can never share through touch or spoken word.”As you read, you will be amazed that this is Magee’s first published work because she writes with such passion and can be easily mistaken for a seasoned author.

As well as being a psychology major at Xavier University in New Orleans, La, she is the first to be published on OJB Productions and lined up for other projects with the independent company. My favorite poems by this young talent is How Could You?, Burning Alive, and The White Figure.Nostalgic Ink is simply what the title is.

It will take you back into time and possibly make you cry, but it shall hold a special place and always have meaning.-Sharon Mitchell, The Daily Dispatcher
